Intro to Chant
Convene your whole ensemble for an exploration of Gregorian chant.
Service Description
Select from two different sessions for your entire ensemble. INTRODUCTION TO CHANT NOTATION 1) Chant contains the underpinning of our whole experience of Western music. Even our universal system of solfege is rooted in chant. In spite of this profound connection, the musical form of chant is one which intimidates beginners and experienced musicians alike. Now is your opportunity to break through this obstacle, and convene your ensemble for a basic introduction to Gregorian chant notation. In this interactive session, we will survey the simplicity of its notation, and touch on the intuitive progression into our modern musical form. Members will get to connect and reflect as a group, and gain a unique appreciation of the integral role that chant plays in Western music. ---------- MUSICAL LECTIO DIVINA Chant is the "handmaiden of the word", and Gregorian melodies have a unique relationship with the texts they adorn. Enter into the scriptural mystery through the lens of a melody inseparably tied to its text. Explore a musical form that unites peoples across the globe, down through the centuries. No prior experience of any kind with chant is necessary for participants, making it a great starting point for those who seek a "back door" introduction of chant notation to their own choirs. Consider inviting your priest or pastor to join as well. After spending time seeking guidance of the Holy Spirit together, and reflecting on the message of the Scripture to us as related both through the words and the melody, the session will culminate with a singing of the Magnificat. View video example of this session on the main page, "LECTIO DIVINA - NPM St. Louis Presentation". PRICE: Students returning to the Chant Academy may support their ensemble with this session for a free will stipend. Students and choir directors brand new to the Chant Academy may schedule a session for $150 (USD). Members must download Zoom prior to the session. They will need to be seated in a quiet place, in front of a computer with working microphone and videocamera, or a smartphone, and reliable internet access. Ability to read music is helpful, but not required to participate.
